How is 2022 almost over?! As you gear up for the end-of-year tasks and festivities in both your business and personal life, don’t forget to set aside some time to prepare your business for the New Year. Good things come to those who plan!
Let’s jump right in with the CliffsNotes version. If you’re wondering what you can do to set your business up for a good start next year, here’s where to start:
As a business owner, it’s extremely helpful to reflect at the end of each year, look at your numbers, and then set an intention for the New Year. You can set this intention after brainstorming new ideas, researching market trends and opportunities, crowdsourcing feedback and ideas with your business besties, setting goals, manifesting—whatever works best for you, do that! And then make a plan with actionable steps to help you reach your goals for the New Year.
Now let’s dig deeper into some of the different areas of your business you should be reflecting on and setting intentions for. As you prepare for 2023, some big-picture categories you should be planning around include finances, team members, marketing, and YOU.
While it’s best not to wait until the end of each year to figure out how the year went financially for your business, the end of the year IS the perfect time to use a critical eye to look over what came in and what went out, and what your bottomline was. Based on what you see from the previous year, you can then make informed choices about the next year’s budget. (Oh, and pro tip for our founder, Jen: Look at your numbers every day. Yeah, every day!)
The end of the year is also the perfect time to talk to each of your team members and check in with her about how the year went for her as an employee. If you already do these check-ins regularly, perhaps take this last check-in of 2022 up a notch with an official performance review or a special goal-setting sesh.
We highly recommend planning for 2023 marketing campaigns now. You don’t have to have everything figured out before the ball drops, but you should definitely have an idea about what you want to do and when, so that a campaign never creeps up on you. Pencil in a start date for each campaign in your 2023 calendar and adjust as it gets closer, if needed.
Last but not least, please check in with yourself as you prepare for the New Year! How do YOU feel about what went down in 2022, and what do you want to accomplish in 2023? What goals do you have for yourself as a business owner? As a human? What steps can you take to set yourself up for success in the next 12 months?
Your vision for you as a person and your vision for your business may intersect, or it may not. Either way, find time to flesh out both visions, and we promise it’ll help you ring in the New Year confidently and with positive momentum.
