Being an entrepreneur can be nothing short of terrifying—especially when you’ve put your money, time, effort, and reputation on the line. You may feel overwhelmed and stressed at times, and while a little bit of overwhelm and stress can be normal, don’t buy into the idea that this is how it’s supposed to be—at least not all the time. If business-related fears have you doubting all your life decisions, we get you, and we’ve got you!
Our founder Jen has been there and done that. After leaving her full-time corporate job with $3,000 to her name, she set out on her own with a goal of becoming a successful entrepreneur. Not knowing when or how she would secure her next client (not to mention the money she needed to pay rent), she spent HOURS on LinkedIn, went on countless coffee dates with other entrepreneurs, and asked friends and family to send her clients. She was feeling desperate, but she didn’t stay there long.
Six months later, she hit six figures.
What is this magic, you ask? It wasn’t wizardry that transported her from the struggle bus to a place of security as an entrepreneur, and it wasn’t luck, either. It was Jen’s ability to move past her fear (with help!) and take the steps she needed to build a profitable business. Here are our top four tips!
Top 4 action steps for moving from scared to profitable:
- Networking: The Harvard Business Review reports that career success can be positively correlated with a person’s ability and willingness to network. In fact, there’s a bunch of research that says the same. Networking is just smart business! Imagine being stuck in quicksand and not calling out for help. If you’re stuck, ask for help! Chances are good that your network can help you get unstuck, and continuous networking can set you on a path to profitability.
- Content strategy: You know that whole “content is king” thing? Well, you may want to put some stock in it. Getting the right content in front of the right people at the right time is literal gold. Build a strategy that will help you reach your ideal client with solid content that converts.
- Hiring a coach: A 1:1 business coach can really help entrepreneurs move past feeling stuck and afraid. Business coaches are not only (ideally) experienced in building a business but also (again, ideally) really good at helping a person become the best version of herself. If you need someone to take you under her wing and help you fly, consider finding yourself a good business coach.
- Invest in your business: This one can feel unnatural. When you’re scraping pennies trying to make the dream work, you may be tempted to pocket every bit of profit—especially if you’re pouring your blood, sweat, and tears into building something. However, an investment in your business is an investment in your future (your much-more-profitable future). Investing in your business could mean investing in a new hire who can move your business forward. It may also mean investing in a rebrand, an SEO audit, or a PR/marketing agency.
If you’re feeling desperate and ready to move on from being overwhelmed, stressed, and scared, these four steps can help get you there. And once you’re profitable, the NEXT step is to move from a founder role to a CEO role! It can be done!
